Set up Nib on your iPad

Nib is ready when your iPad is running iPadOS 18 or later, has enough free space for scanned papers and can open the files you plan to mark. Apple Pencil is optional, but it gives you the most direct annotation experience.

Check the iPad

Open Settings → General → About and confirm the iPadOS version. Nib requires iPadOS 18 or later and is designed to feel best on iPadOS 26.

Also check Settings → General → iPad Storage. Scanned class sets can be large, so leave comfortable space for imported pages, annotations and final exports.

Prepare Apple Pencil

If you plan to annotate scripts by hand, pair and charge the Apple Pencil that is compatible with your iPad. Open Notes and draw a few lines to confirm that input is working before starting a marking session.

You can still score, navigate and add typed feedback without Apple Pencil.

Complete the first-run setup

1. Open Nib

   Launch the app and read the short introduction to assessments, templates and scripts.

2. Choose local-first defaults

   Your work saves on the iPad first. Leave iCloud syncing off for the initial trial unless you already need the same marking on another device.

3. Allow access when you use a feature

   Nib asks for camera, photo or microphone access only when the related import or feedback feature needs it. You can change those permissions later in Settings.

Confirm you are ready

You are ready to continue when Nib opens normally, the iPad has enough space for the test set and your chosen import source is available in Files, Photos or beside you as paper.

Next, import your first class set.

If setup does not look right

• Restart Nib after installing an iPadOS update.
• Check that the iPad has free storage before importing a large PDF.
• Reconnect Apple Pencil from the Bluetooth settings if strokes do not appear in Notes.
• Email help@mynib.app with your iPad model and iPadOS version if Nib will not open.
