Digital marking means reviewing, scoring and annotating student work on a device instead of carrying a physical stack of scripts. For formal assessments, the most useful version of this workflow keeps the original paper visible, preserves the teacher’s judgement and records results as the marking happens.
It is not the same as automatic grading. A good digital marking system removes administrative friction around the decision; it does not make the decision for the teacher.
What does a digital marking workflow look like?
A practical workflow has five stages:
- Prepare the assessment structure, including questions, maximum marks and any rubric or mark scheme.
- Import student work, usually as one or more scanned PDF files.
- Match each script to the correct student and check that every page is present.
- Mark the work, add feedback and flag anything that needs another look.
- Review the results, then export scores or marked scripts.
The important change is not simply replacing red pen with a stylus. Digital marking can keep the paper, score, comments, progress and class results connected. That removes the repeated jobs of adding marks by hand, transferring totals to a spreadsheet and searching through a pile for an answer that needs review.
Why teachers move from paper to digital marking
Paper is immediate and familiar, but a physical stack creates avoidable work. Pages can be separated, totals need to be transcribed, repeated comments must be rewritten and class-wide patterns only become visible after another round of data entry.
Digital marking is most valuable when it improves the flow around the marking itself:
- The next script or response is ready without reshuffling paper.
- Scores are recorded beside the answer and totalled automatically.
- Reusable feedback can be inserted and adapted.
- Marked work remains organised by assessment and student.
- Question-level results are available without building a separate spreadsheet.
- Work can be paused and resumed without losing the place in the stack.
These are modest changes individually. Across a full class set, however, they reduce interruptions and protect the teacher’s concentration.
Paper-by-paper or question-by-question?
There are two common ways to mark a class assessment digitally.
Paper-by-paper marking follows one student’s whole script from start to finish. It gives a continuous view of that student’s performance and suits extended work where later answers depend on earlier reasoning.
Question-by-question marking shows the same question for every student before moving to the next question. It keeps the mark scheme and standard of comparison stable in working memory. This can be particularly useful for maths, science and other structured assessments.

How to prepare paper scripts
You do not need to abandon paper exams to mark digitally. Scan the completed scripts as PDFs using a document scanner or a reliable scanning app. Use a consistent page size, keep pages upright and choose a resolution that makes handwriting clear without producing unmanageably large files.
Before marking, verify:
- the expected number of scripts;
- the expected pages per script;
- student names or identifiers;
- page order and orientation;
- any blank, duplicated or unreadable pages.

What to look for in digital marking software
A digital marking tool should make the frequent actions fast and the risky actions obvious.
A clear view of the answer
The script is the primary evidence. Scores, rubrics and feedback controls should be close at hand without covering the student’s work. On an iPad, zooming, panning and Apple Pencil annotation should feel direct.
Flexible scoring
Look for question maximums, whole or decimal marks where appropriate, rubric scoring and an explicit state for unattempted questions. Totals should be calculated from the recorded question marks, not maintained as a second number that can drift.
Consistent feedback without robotic feedback

Progress and review states
The app should show what is unmarked, complete or flagged. A teacher should be able to stop halfway through a class set and know exactly where to resume.
Useful exports
Check that you can return marked work in a practical format and export results for further analysis. A digital workflow should not trap assessment evidence inside the marking tool.
Honest offline behaviour

A simple way to trial digital marking
Start with one short assessment and one class. Do not redesign the assessment at the same time.
- Scan the scripts and keep the paper originals until the trial is complete.
- Recreate the existing questions and mark scheme faithfully.
- Mark a small sample and check that scores, feedback and exports appear as expected.
- Complete the class set using one marking order.
- Compare the experience with the previous paper process.
Judge the trial by practical questions: Was it easy to find the next answer? Did you repeat less administration? Could you review an uncertain decision? Were the final results ready to use? Avoid measuring success only by total marking time; consistency, recoverability and lower mental friction matter too.
